A proposed multi-million-dollar hotel near one of Victoria’s most popular tourist attractions, the Great Ocean Road, has lost support from the local business group as hundreds of residents rally against the development. The Apollo Bay Chamber of Commerce had initially supported the proposal, by the Oceans United Investment Group, to turn more than hectares of land into a luxury hotel.

Chamber president John Gorman said members held a special meeting after concerns were raised about the size of the development. He said while business owners want more money injected into the town, the hotel plan seemed too large. The investment group want to buy the land, 3. The group wants to develop more than rooms, 82 villas and a spa and wellness centre, including a metre indoor pool.

Mr Gorman said casual workers would be attracted to jobs at the proposed developed. But there was a major problem with the availability of rental accommodation in the holiday town, which is popular with tourists heading to coastal attraction the 12 Apostles. People are concerned that there’s going to be an exacerbation of that current issue,” he said. The council said it had received objections to the proposal and nine letters of support so far.
